This database currently lists 15,068 generating plants worldwide in 167 countries and a higher number of generating units.
The database is growing with continuous additions. We will also be adding detail for individual plants continuously, where it is currently not available.
The plants are classified by fuel (over 100 individual fuels or combinations of fuels), fuel group (Thermal, hydro, nuclear, RE, hybrid - 100%), capacity MW (100%), units and technology (70%), year of commissioning (76%), ownership type (utility, IPP, CPP - 100%) and owner (71%).
The geographical composition of the database is as follows.

The plants are classified by fuel (over 100 individual fuels or combinations of fuels) and fuel group (Thermal, hydro, nuclear, RE, hybrid - 100%), with the following numbers of plants listed.

Nuclear: 596
Renewable: 1,775
The database is comprehensive over the capacity range and is not restricted to large plants. 1,999 plants with installed capacity of 500MW and over are listed, 930 plants of 1,000 MW and over, and 5,898 of 1 MW or less, together with 7,171 plants with capacity between 1 to 500 MW. All sections of the industry are covered, utilities, independent power producers (IPPs) and captive power plants (CPPs). 69% of the plants are utility-owned.
The database is contained in an Excel file or can also be ordered in a 690 page PDF version.
The addresses of utilities are available in the companion database, ESI 2004, a database also available in Excel, listing 6,631 utilities, with 2,062 generating companies.
