More jobs not less in responding to climate change.
'Responding to climate change will create new business, new employment opportunities, and a more sustainable economy' says Dr Ray Wills, Chair, WASEA.
/Power and Energy PR News/ - PERTH, AUSTRALIA, June 04, 2007 - 'Groups with a vested interest in attempting to delay responses to climate change as long as possible are bleakly forecasting the end of the economy and a loss of jobs because we are trying to sustain the planet for ourselves and our children.' says Dr Wills
'The Prime Minister says he is worried about protecting jobs. The real result in an emissions trading economy will be the creation of new jobs, more jobs, not less - they will just be different jobs, in an economy much less exposed to the impact of carbon emissions.'
'As in all market places, a carbon-constrained economy will have both winners and losers - but there is good reason to expect that the losers will be a small minority. And the real losers will be those who have resisted change and not planned for the new economy and not adapted to climate change' says Dr Wills.
'An emissions trading scheme will stimulate the economy and create a market for low emission and renewable technologies. And if Australia invests strongly in such technologies now, these will also be in great demand by the rest of the world striving for a low carbon future and hence stimulate export opportunities for Australia.'
'In addition, energy efficiency measures must occur simultaneously, and in doing so will counter a rise in power bills and fuel bills even when the unit cost of energy rises.'
'For example, the Federal Government has failed to act to increase mandated standards on vehicle efficiency in Australia and so reduce Australia's reliance on foreign imported fuels. Fuel and oil imports last year racked up a bill for Australia's deficit of $22.5 billion. Redefining the Federal mandated energy efficiency targets for Australian vehicle fleet would deliver reduced costs to all consumers and reduce inflationary pressure on transported goods. Combined with support for the biofuels industry in Australia, such measures will bolster energy security for Australia' says Dr Wills.
'The time has run out for solutions to global warming that are merely convenient - we actually need to make an effort, a real, concerted, hard-working, economy-reforming, effort. And we need to act today.' says Dr Wills.
